For some reason, he zeroes in on the scent of the lipstick. Cosmetics that women wear have a sweet, waxy smell that he likes, although it's half associated with comfort and half with awkward dating situations in his brain. But anxiety is becoming less and less a part of their relationship, and he feels the comfort of it much more strongly. Should he notice the lip prints later, he'll be pleased to have been marked by her, however temporarily.
