Maybe the kid who never admitted to being afraid of anyone or anything had a little streak of cowardice after all.
But that was then, and this is now, and the regrets may well come spilling out later, but at the moment there are pancakes to cook, so Steve lets himself feel this, lets himself blush a little more, and gives his friend a crooked, but not discouraging, smile.
And then discovers he's abruptly run out of clever banter.]
